Insider Secrets for Home Decorating … SHHHHH!!!

Being a designer can be very demanding. One must continuously come up with fresh and innovative ideas in order to remain competitive. Through the years I have developed some wonderful ways to save myself time and the dreaded “money mistakes”.
I am a serious journal keeper. I love writing down things that I want to remember whether it be about my life, my children, or grandchildren.
Believe it or not, a design or home decor journal is a very handy thing to have. I have saved myself countless headaches and do-overs with this idea. It is so simply to do.
Take a picture of the room you want to re-vamp. Try and include as much of the room as is possible. In the bedroom for instance, you need to have the bed and at least one window in the shot to match your bed ensemble and your window treatments…in the bathroom you need to try and include the toilet, the bathtub and a window. If possible, and it usually is in the bathroom, have the sink in the picture as well so you can add your chosen accessories to match.
Now use your computer to enlarge the pics. I usually go 8/10. That is a very simple task I know, but the fun part starts now.
You can use these enlargements to “mock” up your room. Print out some of the items you are thinking of using in your room and place them on the corresponding item. Now you can see what the room will look like with the themes you have been mulling over. No mistakes to haunt you when you keep a journal and get creative with pictures.
This helps me make the transition form season to season with ease. I love my journals and I share them with friends.
This works so well when purchasing mix and match items. You can slowly build your room to your personal likings. All the way from the rugs to the toilet seat, and from the shower curtain to the window treatments.
How fun and inexpensive. More secrets to be revealed soon!

When a Shower Curtain is More Than a Shower Curtain
While many updated and renovated homes are built with sliding glass shower doors, many of us are still in need of a shower curtain to protect our bathrooms from being aggressively invaded by water. You may consider yourself behind the times, but I’m here to explain how you couldn’t be more wrong. Sorry, dear reader, but I fear that it is in your best interest that I’m as blatant as possible right now.
We’ve written several posts related to remodeling various rooms within the home, the bathroom included. However, I’d like to expand on why you should view your everlasting need for a shower curtain as something positive.
Affordable? Check. Stylish? Check. Practical? Check.
What’s not to appreciate in this scenario? Instead of re-gutting, redesigning, and re-modeling your bathroom from a more technical standpoint, use this opportunity to let your shower curtain shine! Simply find a shower curtain that will enhance the color scheme already present in your bathroom.

A very common question for a designer to field is, “How do I cheer up a room and make it over with the minimal amount of work and expense?” Ah… now that is a great question. Luckily, there are some great answers.
1. Let’s say you have a room that is carpeted. We all know that carpet can be very expensive and must be a long lasting investment in our homes. Yet the same old floor from season to season can become drab and very boring. So here are some tips you might find interesting.
Placing accent rugs on carpet is totally in style. It is often thought that rugs are for tile or wood only, which is not the case at all! Adding accent rugs in the bath or bedroom is a very easy and inexpensive way to brighten a dull room.
Coordinate your rug colors with existing colors in the room. For example, pull the color from window treatments, chair pads, comforters and bedspreads.
This will tie your space together and add that “umph” we are all seeking.
2. Now let’s makeover the kitchen in a jiffy on a tight budget.
Chair pads come in so many wonderful styles and colors nowadays! They are one of the least expensive room accessories we can use. Yet they add brilliance to a space.
Perhaps you already have a unique theme. Well, I am so happy to say that there are many kitchen items that match nowadays from your wall clock to your rugs, canisters, and bread box. WOW!
How far you’ll take this inexpensive kitchen face-lift is up to you!

Great Accessories Can Add Style to the Kitchen
No painting…no remodeling…just a bit of fun and clever shopping on your part.
Just remember that small additions bring about big changes. This ultimately leaves you, the consumer, with change to spare!
Decorating has never been easier or more affordable!
Happy decorating…
Stylish Decisions

The vast choices in color and style have some “would be” decoraters confused. Do I want modern…elegant…transitional…contemporary…or a combination of all?
Perhaps categorizing styles will make these choices a breeze.
The MODERN motif is usually signified by bold colors, geometric designs, and shiny or semi-metallic fabrics often found in window treatments or shower curtains.
The ELEGANT motif reflects decadent rich colors and silky fabrics, often layered with lace or gilding.
The TRANSITIONAL ensemble is one of simple beauty. Typically noted by a checkered or plaid pattern…florals may also fall into this category. The fabrics are usually cotton or a cotton blend.
The CONTEMPORARY ensemble combines modern and transitional. It often boasts softer and rounder tones than its modern counterpart, but is a bit edgier than the transitional style.
Many decide to combine one motif with another. This is not only acceptable in the design world…it is encouraged! Contemporary with country floral is one combination that works well together. One of my personal favorites is modern elegance. This involves combining fabrics from one collection and accessories from the other. Mixing and matching rugs and curtains…towels and kitchen or bath accessories can easily complete this elegant transformation. Color blending is the key to making this marriage work.
Choosing the style you desire is easy if you allow your creativity to flow. Create a room that displays your personal style…whatever it may be!
Enhance Your Bedroom with a Comforter Set Ensemble
As we can all probably agree, retiring to a room dedicated to solace & comfort at the end of the day should, by now, be considered a bare necessity. Entering a bedroom that does not fulfill your needs can drastically influence levels of stress and anxiety. Your bedroom can become easily enjoyable by creating a much-needed atmosphere of relaxation. In need of a simple solution? Consider a comforter set ensemble.
Finding a comforter set ensemble that will suit your needs provides an easy way of transforming your drab room into a soft sanctuary. Available in a variety of styles and sizes, comforter set ensembles typically include a comforter, a pair of pillow shams, a bedskirt, and some sort of decorative pillow set. If you have a more neutral color scheme in your bedroom in terms of wall and rug hues, then consider adding a splash of color to your room. Infusing a comforter set ensemble with a striped pattern is an easy way to add some flair to your bedroom.
Updating your comforter set ensemble every couple of years can easily help to add a fresh new look to your bedroom at an affordable price. Simply invest in a few more throw pillows to afford yourself the opportunity for ultimate comfort.
Give Yourself a Lavish Spa Treatment in Your Own Bathroom
How many of us love a visit to a lavish spa? We all need a place that allows us to unwind and to escape from the busy lives that we lead. Most of us get away maybe twice a year, if we are very lucky. Why should we have to leave home to be pampered? If home is where the heart is, then why not put our heart’s desires into our homes?
Here are some tips on how to create a bathroom featuring a bath that transforms into an island of escape…
First, choose a theme. Perhaps you dream daily of visiting a Hawaiian oasis? Or maybe a mountain hide away? Do you dream of an enchanted land of flowers? Dreaming is the beginning step in choosing your ideal bath. Once this has been solidified, accessorize with additional items to completely pamper yourself. Infuse scented bath oils and bubble bath into your bath. For example, for the Hawaiian bath, I would recommend gardenia and passionflower scents, or floral scents such as lilac & roses. In regard to the mountain get away them, I would recommend heather and lavender. Of course, you may already have
decided upon the scent that will permeate your bathroom. It truly depends on whatever will make you most comfortable.
Next, you’ll need some mood enhancing background music. Listen to the soothing sounds of waves on the beach or the gentle sways of nature. Don’t forget to have an elegant bath robe waiting for you as you step out of your bath, relaxed and at perfect peace.
Why wait for a vacation to feel appreciated? All of the luxury of a spa is waiting for you each night as you slip away into your own private paradise.. conveniently located in your own bathroom.
Interior Decorating with Bold Colors

With the New Year comes new hope, fresh ideas, and dreams. Interior decorating is one way to conquer this. Redecorating a drab winter room is a bright way to ring in the New Year. Purple is one of the IN
colors this year - not only in the fashion industry, but also in the design industry. Some folks tend to shy away from interior decorating with bold colors, thinking that they will overpower a room. Here are some great tips for infusing bold colors into a living space.
Purple has many different tones or hues, from dark decadent eggplant to light and lovely lavender. All of the colors in between work together to give a room silent grace and wonder. Layers of color make
interior decorating fun, and give a space ambiance and depth. Add dark purple drapes with sheer lavender valances to give a soft glow to the room. Accessorizing with hues of your signature color will bring casual flair and comfort to the space.
Designer tip: Do not be afraid of color when it comes to interior decorating. Embrace it and invite life into your home. Look at how all of the colors in nature blend together to make the world bloom so beautifully.
How Kitchen Curtains Can Accessorize Your Kitchen
Splashes of color, unique designs, and novelty themes are often found among kitchen decor. Kitchen curtains easily offer a practical way to add personality to a room that is more often viewed for its function than its appeal.
Whether you’re looking for decorative kitchen curtains or for window curtains that will accurately direct sunlight into your kitchen, there are a plethora of options & styles to choose from. Once the curtains have been properly hung, the size of the window will determine how much sunlight reflects throughout your kitchen. This will then help to shape the atmosphere within the designated space. Additionally, fabrics such as cotton and polyester will ensure that the kitchen curtains filter light & air more easily.
If you’re looking for a simple kitchen accessory, then solid-colored window curtains might satisfy your taste. In order to use your kitchen curtains as a dominant focal point within your kitchen,
consider something with a more thematic pattern like roosters, fruits, or a wine bottle print.

3 Simple Ways to Change the Look of Your Bathroom
When people begin to think about remodeling any room, I’d be willing to assume that a primary concern is money. When it comes to the bathroom, many of us likely associate the word ‘remodeling’ with the idea of planning a major overhaul.. new plumbing, new lighting fixtures, new tiling etc. However, adding the appropriate bathroom accessories can easily and affordably alter the look of your bathroom.
Here are 3 simple bathroom accessories & accessory sets that can positively impact the atmosphere in your bathroom:
1) Shower curtain
A necessary bathroom accessory that can introduce an immediate splash of color and theme to your space. Aside from infusing personality into your room, shower curtains are clearly a practical accessory as they protect the rest of the room from being covered in water.
2) Free standing bathroom accessory sets
Purchasing accessories in sets helps to save money and time. When you have your toothbrush holder, lotion pump, tumbler, soap dish, and tissue box packaged together, you spare yourself a search and a few cents!
3) Bath rug sets
If you’ve already found a solid colored shower curtain, then finding matching bath rugs can be quite simple. Typically bath rug sets will include a shower rug, contour rug, and toilet seat cover - quick and easy comfort!
So, the next time that you start to scare yourself when defining the term ‘remodel’, remember that there are simpler ways that can easily deliver the punch that you may be looking for.
